Vanessa's birthday party

The very sweet parents of Vanessa brought a huge cake, goodies bags and drinks to school so tha Vanessa could celebrate her birthday with the class. The children were awed by the size of the cake. They had fun and they sang her a birthday song. Thank you Vanessa and family for making the children's recess so much fun. Happy birthday once again, Vanessa!

Learning Math the fun way!

Learning Math using real chips, cookies, candies and food. Class 2G learned to add, subtract and group.

International Friendship Day

Some children from the class participated in the fashion parade segment for the celebration of International Friendship Day.

Termly project-Design your own water bottle

The children worked in their groups and came up with their ideal water bottle designs. They went around the school and did a survey based on people's choice of colours and design. They then drew out their design and compiled them into a group file. They fabricated their final design using recycled materials.

Reader's Theatre

The children were organised in groups and each group were given different scripts of fairy tales. The children worked in their groups, allocated their individual roles, practised the scripts and presented their Reader's Theatre to the class in STAGE Room 3. The children will briefed on what to look out for during their presentation. Example, posture, to remain 'in character' at all times during presentation, maintain eye contact with audience, etc.

What is Reader's Theatre?
Like storytelling, reader's theater can create images by suggestion that could never be realistically portrayed on stage. Reader’s Theater involves children in oral reading through reading parts in scripts. Unlike traditional theatre, the emphasis is mainly on oral expression of the part. Reader’s Theater is "theatre of the imagination". It involves children in understanding their world, creating their own scripts, reading aloud, performing with a purpose, and bringing enjoyment to both themselves and their audiences.

Antonyms

The children learned about Antonyms in the last term, graduating from their list of idioms in their wordbank books. Worksheets were given out to them and most of them are able to list antonyms with ease and confidence. Just a recap here, antonyms are words with opposite meanings. The words, 'happy' and 'sad' are antonyms.

Here are some example practices:

1. I felt rich because I got 20 dollars
for my birthday!

A. wealthy

B. happy

C. poor

2. Debbie wiggled because the chair
was too hard.

A. soft

B. uncomfortable

C. solid

Idioms

Today,I taught the class words called idioms, here are some examples:
A Picture Paints a Thousand Words
Finger lickin' good
For a spilt second
Raining Cats and Dogs
Kick the bucket
Beat around the bush
Give someone a hand
Butterflies in the stomach

The children are told idioms are figures of speech and that the meaning cannot be deduced by the words of the idioms. An idiom is a combination of words that has a meaning that is different from the meanings of the individual words themselves. The class are told that idioms, when used appropriately, can make the stories or written expressions interesting for the readers.

Nicole Low knew about it, as I have told them about it the day before. She told her parents about it and they bought her a dictionary called 'Dictionary of Idioms'.

Serena did a typeout of idioms. I shared it with the class that day.

Healthy teeth

Fluoride is a natural element that can be found in many things, like the water we drink and the food we eat. Decades ago, scientists began to notice that children who lived in places where fluoride occurred naturally in the water, had fewer dental cavities. Fluoride that is absorbed by your body is used by the cells that build your teeth to make stronger enamel. Topical fluoride - fluoride that is applied to the outside of the enamel - makes the
crystals that form enamel more durable. Tooth enamel crystals that have fluoride are much more resistant to acid. They are less likely to breakdown and cause the tooth surface to become porous.
If your dentist recommends a fluoride treatment during your next dental visit, you'll be receiving topical protection. The fluoride your dentist puts in your mouth will help make the crystals in your tooth enamel stronger. Always use a toothpaste with fluoride. Look for the Canadian Dental Association seal of approval on the toothpaste tube in your bathroom.

Brushing alone isn't enough to clean all of the plaque from the surface of your teeth. Interproximal areas (those places in between your teeth) and below the gumline are two spots where the toothbrush can't reach and plaque can build up. These are areas that are more susceptible to cavities. Daily flossing and regular visits to your dentist are the only effective ways to remove this plaque.
Did you know that failing to floss means up to 35% of your tooth surface goes uncleaned?
Dental floss is a man-made fibre (usually made of nylon) that comes on a spool. Ask your parents or your dentist how to correctly use dental floss if you're not sure.

Seung-Hui Cho

Seung-Hui Cho (January 18, 1984April 16, 2007) was a university student who shot and killed 32 people, and wounded many more, in a shooting spree termed the "Virginia Tech massacre." The massacre took place on April 16, 2007 on the campus of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia, just four days before the eighth anniversary of the Columbine shooting. Cho committed suicide after law enforcement officers breached the doors of the academic building where he shot most of his victims, including faculty and students. Cho was a South Korean national with permanent resident status in the United States and a senior English major at Virginia Tech.

Around 7:15 a.m. Cho allegedly killed two students, Emily J. Hilscher and Ryan C. "Stack" Clark, on the fourth floor of
West Ambler Johnston Hall, a high-rise co-educational dormitory. Although police had not stated positively at the time that Cho was the perpetrator of that shooting and the earlier one, forensic evidence confirmed that the same gun was used in both shooting incidents. Within the next two and a half hours, Cho returned to his room to re-arm himself and mailed a package containing pictures, digital video files and documents to NBC News. At approximately 9:45 a.m., Cho then crossed the campus to Norris Hall, a classroom building on the campus where, in a span of nine minutes, Cho shot dozens of people, killing 30 of them. As police breached the area of the building where Cho attacked the faculty and students, Cho committed suicide in Norris 211 with a gunshot to his temple. Cho's gunshot wound destroyed his face, frustrating the identification of his body for several hours. The police identified Cho by matching the fingerprints on the guns used in the shootings with immigration records. Before the shootings, Cho's only known connection to Norris Hall was as a student in the sociology class, Deviant Behavior, which met in a classroom on the second floor of the building.

Seung-Hui Cho
immigrated to the United States at age 8 with both of his parents and his older sister in September 1992. Sun-Kyung Cho. Cho's family lived first in Detroit, Michigan before moving to Centreville, an unincorporated community located in western fairfax County, Virginia about 25 miles (40 km)
west of
Washington, D.C. Cho was a permanent resident of the United States and a South Korean national. His parents are Christians and Cho himself was raised as a member of the religion.Reaction of Cho's familyCho's older sister, Sun-Kyung Cho, a 2004 graduate of Princeton University who works as a contractor for the United States Department of State, prepared a statement on her family's behalf to apologize publicly for her brother's actions, in addition to lending prayers to the victims and the families of the wounded and killed victims. "This is someone that I grew up with and loved. Now I feel like I didn't know this person," she said in the statement issued through a North Carolina attorney. "We never could have envisioned that he was capable of so much violence." Cho's grandfather stated, "My grandson Seung-Hui was very shy. I can't believe he did such a thing."
Review of Cho's medical records
During the investigation, Virginia investigators learned after a review of Cho's medical records that Cho never complied with the order for the mandated mental health treatment as an outpatient. The investigators also found that neither the court nor New River Valley Community Services Board exercised oversight of Cho's case to determine his compliance with the order for outpatient treatment.
As a result, Cho escaped compliance with the court order for mandatory mental health treatment as an outpatient, even though Virginia law required community services boards to "recommend a specific course of treatment and programs" for mental health patients and "monitor the person's compliance." As for the court, Virgina law also mandated that, if a person fails to comply with a court order to seek mental health treatment as an outpatient, that person can be brought back before the court "and if found still in crisis, can be committed to a psychiatric institution for up to 180 days." Cho was never summoned to court to explain why he had not complied with the
December 14, 2005 order for mandatory mental health treatment as an outpatient.

What happened in class on May 22 07

We had P.E today. The children learned how to handle the street bandy sticks. To the children, it was like golf. We had recess right after P.E . The children lined up at the Lower Concourse after recess. We did lots of filing for English. I asked Ada Lim to bring her drawing set to school as there are stencils in it. I taught them the history of public art and introduced grafitti during art lessons. I introduced 'Banksy' as artist of the week, who is known to use the stencilling technique when it comes to grafitti artwork. So, I wanted to show the class more about stencils.

Station Learning Activities (Length)

Yesterday, the children did station learning activities on the topic of length. There were a total of 4 stations to complete, located at the canteen and the upper concourse. They went around the different stations in their groups to complete the different activities found at the stations. It was a combined learning programme, together with Class 2E children.

Collage (Art) - My Favourite Animal

I read the book, 'The Mixed-up Chameleon' by Eric Carle and introduced them to the art technique, collage, which was used by the illustrator in the book. The children enjoyed the book and were happily creating them own art pieces of animals in art lessons.

Shi Yun's birthday celebration in the school canteen (5-2-07)

Shi Yun celebrated her birthday with the class in the school canteen.

STAGE activities based on the book, "The King of The Birds"

I read the big book, 'The King of The Birds' by Judy Ling to the class during their stage activities. The children did a book review and a word map (colours) in their groups based on the book. Everyone played their different roles and got their group work done in time. In Unit 3, 'Writing is Exciting', the children learnt about the following:
  • fwhat are fiction and non-fiction stories
  • the different text types (poetry, recipe, list, stories and riddles)
  • how to do book reviews

The children are reminded to keep in mind the following while doing their book reviews:

  • identify the title and author/writer of the book
  • include a short background/ overview of the story (characters and setting/place)
  • describe the book (whether it is interesting or entertaining and why)

Unit 5 plural form & compound words

For grammar, the children came to an understanding that when a word ends in double s, sh, ch, x, and often o, we must add -es to make the word plural. For example:

  • foxes
  • ashes
  • heroes
  • touches
  • dresses

Class 2G has also learnt that a compound word is formed when two words are joined to form a new word. For example:

  • base + ball = baseball
  • sun + flower = sunflower
  • cup + cake = cupcake

Many of the children came up with many compound words on their 'Compound Word Hunt' assignment. However, Lionel got all mixed up and came up with a list of two-syllables words, thinking they are compound words, like 'fa+ther=father'. That is a mistake because 'fa' does not stand alone as a word found in the English dictionary. So is 'ther'. Be sure you look out for such avoidable mistakes, children.

The 3 places I would like to visit

Class 2G did a write-up on the 3 places they would like to visit. I love Rachie's work. Neat, nicely decorated and interesting. We shared and talked about the different places we have visited and others we would like to visit. It was interesting to learn about the different countries. I shared my London travel photos with the class. We talked about Cheng Hao's trip to South Korea, Abigail's trip to Genting Highlands and Kevin's 'Fast Car Rider' experience in Malaysia.

Unit 5 'Holiday Time'

Currently, Class 2G is moving forward to Unit 5, 'Holiday Time' from Unit 1, 'Things We Wear', under the theme of 'Clothes and Holidays'. The class was asked to bring their holiday photographs so that they can do a group sharing as part one of the introduction activity in class. As part of the interdisciplinary learning, the unit was integrated with Art, having the children draw their 'Most Memorable Holiday'. I have received many interesting pieces and I am looking forward to the sharing activity tomorrow.
